College Dormitory
Faced with a growing student population and limited housing facilities, a Massachusetts college recently added a 38,000 SF dormitory in time for arriving freshman in the fall of 2000.
Mohlin & Company was the structural engineer of record for this design/build effort, which included complete structural design, construction monitoring and developing and monitoring a material testing program.
The four-story building boasts 144 beds of cluster concept housing. Each four person suite provides two bedrooms, study and bathroom. The dormitory also has quiet study rooms, game rooms, laundry facilities and a resident apartment.
The structure is composed of a poured in place concrete foundation, including cantilevered walls where required, a structural steel frame, precast concrete plank floors and pre-fabricated steel roof trusses. The exterior is a brick veneer to match the theme of the other college buildings.
With the completion of the dormitory for occupancy in the fall of 2000, the incoming freshmen are presented with a first class living facility, which will greatly enhance their college experience.
