Hofstra University Arena

Mohlin & Company recently became the structural engineer of record for a design/build team specializing in collegiate athletic and multi-use facilities.

The facility was designed and built for the men's and women's America East basketball teams and is also intended to be used for stage events, exhibitions and trade shows. Highlights of the building include 5000 retractable chair back seats, six luxury skybox suites, locker rooms for coaches and varsity teams, "Pride Club" alumni lounge, spacious training facilities, ticket windows, concessions stands, and television and media capabilities.

The structure of the building, designed by Mohlin & Company, features a column free 40 foot floor to ceiling height which guarantees excellent views of the competition surface from any seat in the building. This was achieved by spanning 155 feet across the entire court with 2-14 foot deep steel trusses with 110 foot long, 8 foot deep super long span open web joists between trusses. The end bays of the building are framed from the trusses to the exterior walls with 6'-8" deep long span joists for an overall building width of 290 feet. Additionally, the playing surface is 13 feet below grade which required poured in place, cantilevered retaining walls designed to support the perimeter columns as well as masonry shear walls and the mezzanine level seating.

Ground was broken for the project in January of 1999 and construction was completed ahead of schedule and in time for the first men's basketball game on January 2, 2000.
